MARSEILLE, France -- Fifth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia and No. . 6 Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France reached the second round of the Open 13 in contrasting styles on Tuesday. Roger-Vasselin ground out a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory over big-serving Ante Pavic of Croatia, before Dodig followed up with a 7-5, 6-2 win against wild card Olivetti of France. Pavic had 23 aces, compared to 13 for Roger-Vasselin, who saved seven of the nine break-point chances he faced. He next plays Ukraines Sergiy Stakhovsky after he rallied past qualifier Daniel Evans 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Dodig, who saved all 11 break-points he faced and broke Olivetti three times, will play Germanys Tobias Kamke in the second round after he beat Britains Kyle Edmund 7-5, 6-1. Meanwhile, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia had 12 aces as he comfortably beat Dutchman Igor Sijsling 6-4, 6-4. Davydenko, who reached a career highest ranking of No. 3, next plays second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the defending champion. Tsonga leads 3-2 in their career head-to-heads. . Five years ago, Nestor and Zimonjic beat the American twins to win the title. But the Bryans, the worlds top-ranked team, needed 74 minutes to earn the victory Saturday as both Nestor and Zimonjic lost serve in the second set. . - Carter Verhaeghe scored the winner with 41 seconds to go as the Niagara IceDogs edged the North Bay Battalion 3-2 to even their first-round series at a game apiece in Ontario Hockey League playoff action on Sunday.SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres have hired A.J. Preller as general manager, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the hiring hasnt been made official. The team called a news conference for 4 p.m. local time. Preller has been assistant GM of the Texas Rangers. He has extensive international scouting experience, particularly in Latin America. Preller replaces Josh Byrnes, who was fired June 22. He beat out a field of finalists that included assistant GMs Mike Hazen of the Boston Red Sox and Billy Eppler of the New York Yankees, and Kim Ng, senior vice-president for baseball operations for Maajor League Baseball. . . Ng is one of the highest-ranking women in baseball. There has never been a female GM in MLB or any of the other major sports. Ng also interviewed for the Padres GM job in 2009 after Kevin Towers was fired. The job eventually went to Jed Hoyer. The Padres are looking for stability. Theyre on their third ownership group since 2009 and Preller is their fourth general manager since then. San Diego has had only two seasons above .500 since winning consecutive NL West titles in 2005-06. Although the Padres have been playing better since the All-Star break, they began the day 10 games under .500 and 12 games behind Los Angeles in the NL West. ' ' '
